GERSH DRIVERS EDUCATION EXTENDED PROGRAM

The Gersh Drivers Ed Extended Program is open to individuals of all abilities needing extra support to
learn how to drive. Our new program is made up of 4 Steps that each student will master at their own
pace with added instructional support.

The Next Gersh Drivers Ed Extended Program Begins on Saturday, July 6, 2024.
Depending on the availability of staff we will offer sessions throughout the week. Enrollment will open in
mid-June (date TBD). You will be able to purchase sessions online before the first scheduled session.

Students can sign up for sessions that are convenient for their schedule and add/drop sessions as
needed.

Sessions will be held at 21 Sweet Hollow Road, Huntington, NY 11743.
Our 5-hour course dates will be posted soon!
The only Step that will have a definitive time frame is Step 1, which will last four weeks at a time.

  • Step 1 – NYS Permit Preparation Class
  • Step 2 – Virtual Simulator & Road Safety
  • Step 3 – Golf Cart Skills & Road Safety
    • Our golf cart will have a cover during rain and cold weather to lessen the need to cancel classes.
      • When the weather is uncooperative, our sessions will focus on studying the Rules of the Road.
  • Step 4 – In Car Driving Lessons
    • Students will practice driving a car to prepare for a road test through North Hills Driving School.

Assessments A student must pass each Step before moving to the next.

  • To move from Step 1 to Step 2 (or to start at Step 2), the student must pass the NY DMV permit
    test.
  • To move from Step 2 to Step 3, the student must demonstrate a working knowledge of the Rules
    of the Road with accuracy and be able to navigate all simulator fields (city, country, etc.).
  • To move from Step 3 to Step 4, the student must demonstrate defined driving skills and master
    the Rules of the Road.
  • To pass Step 4, the student, parent, and Gersh instructor must all agree that the student is
    ready to schedule and take the road test.

Below are many, but not all, of the concepts that are covered throughout our program:

  • Safety protocols such as wearing seatbelt, adjusting mirrors, ensuring all passengers wear
    seatbelts, etc.
  • Proper hand placements on the steering wheel and sitting appropriate distance from steering wheel.
  • Understanding the important documents that one must always have available while driving.
  • The appropriate distance to keep between your car and the car in front of you.
  • Using and understanding Turn Signals
  • How to identify and react to all major road signs (Speed Limit, Stop, Yield, No Turn on Red, No U-
    Turn, No Parking, No Standing, One Way, Do Not Enter, Detour, etc.)
  • How to identify and react to all major street markings (solid white lines, broken white lines, yellow,
    double yellow lines, turning lanes, etc.)
  • How to approach a RED TRAFFIC LIGHT and the proper steps to making a right turn on red
  • How to approach a YELLOW TRAFFIC LIGHT
  • How to approach a STOP sign and who has the right of way
  • How to approach a YIELD sign and when to yield to another driver
  • How and when to activate windshield wipers (and their various speeds)
  • What to do at a Pedestrian Crosswalk
  • What to do at train tracks and railroad crossings
  • What to do when driving through roadwork and construction areas
  • Understanding GPS and ability to understand and follow navigation directions.
  • Emergency protocols such as what to do when an emergency vehicle is behind you or on the side
    of the road; what to do if you are in an emergency; how to handle a flat tire, etc.
  • Accident protocols such as what to do if you see one or are in an accident situation.
  • How to pull over properly and safely, and what to do if you are pulled over by the police.
    To move from Step 3 – Step 4, the student must master the concepts outlined in the Rules of the Road
    and exhibit confidence in Driving Skills while using the golf cart.

To move from Step 3 – Step 4, the student must master the concepts outlined in the Rules of the Road and exhibit confidence in Driving Skills while using the golf cart. Driving skills are considered to be:

  • How to adjust mirrors
  • Gas Acceleration
  • Deceleration & Braking
  • Obeying road signs and speed limits
  • Right & Left turns
  • Parking, Parallel Parking, U-Turns & 3-point turns
  • Reversing & backing up
  • Staying between the lines on the road
  • How to pull away from a curb
  • How to pump gas
  • Check Engine light.
  • Ability to stay calm under pressure and focus on driving without distractions
